life groups

Almost everyone knows Jesus had 12 disciples. But within that group Jesus had what we like to call a life group—Peter, James and John—with whom he shared more intimate experiences (cf. Luke 9:28-31; Matt 26:36-38). A life group is 2-4 people with whom you can share what’s really going on in your life. It is a place to connect and grow deep relationships with people you already know. The purpose of a life group is to help each other grow spiritually to be more like Jesus Christ.

getting started

To form a life group, talk to 1-3 people with whom you have an established, trustworthy relationship. Agree to meet on a regular basis (e.g. weekly, bi-weekly) for a defined period of time (so no one feels stuck). Take turns asking each other the life group questions and let the conversation go where the Holy Spirit leads. Some life groups may choose to supplement their conversations with a book or Bible study.

life group principles

  • Ask: ask questions often; ask permission before you give advice.
  • Encourage: as often as you can, be positive and encouraging.
  • Correct: give correction humbly and lovingly (and only when necessary).
  • Keep: what’s shared in the group stays in the group!

life group questions

  • How are you doing (this week)?
  • How’s your spiritual journey going? (or) How’s your relationship with God going?
  • What do you think God is trying to do in your life right now? (or) What do you sense God has been saying to you lately?
  • What have you been reading lately (in the Bible or otherwise)?
  • Where are you struggling this week?
  • How can I/we pray for you?
